THE RISE OF MAHE

Most teenage strikers in English non-league football never hear from an international federation. Mohammed Mahe Khan has now heard from one twice in a single summer. In June, Moulton FC announced his call-up to Bangladesh’s U-20 squad. A few months later, he is named for the senior team’s SAFF Championship campaign, the biggest tournament in South Asian football, played on home soil in Dhaka.

This case study follows how he got there: the background, the club that gave him a platform, the numbers behind the buzz, and what the senior call-up means for a national team that has spent the year hunting for a goalscorer.

BACKGROUND: BANGLADESHI ROOTS, ENGLISH FOOTBALL

Mahe was born on 2 November 2007 and is of Bangladeshi heritage. He is part of a growing group of players raised in England who are now pulled toward the Bangladesh national team, a trend that has already brought defender Zidane Yousuf and winger Farhaan Ali Wahid into recent Bangladesh squads.

His own route runs through the lower rungs of the English pyramid. He came through Rushden & Higham United and the Moulton FC under-18s before establishing himself in Moulton’s first team. It is a semi-professional path where results, goals and word of mouth do the work an academy name does elsewhere.

MOULTON FC: THE PLATFORM

Moulton formed in 1896 and play at Brunting Road, Northamptonshire. They entered step-six football for the first time in 2022 and finished third in 2024-25, then won the end-of-season play-offs to reach step five for the first time in the club’s history. This season they compete in the United Counties League Premier Division South, a harder league than they have ever played in.

The team results around him tell the same story. In the five matches between 15 September and 6 October that appear in the club’s appearance log, Moulton won four, drew one, scored 19 goals and conceded five. That run included 5-0 over FC Stratford and a 4-1 win at St Neots Town.

Seven matches is a small sample, and this article says so. The point is the pace: a teenage forward scoring at better than a goal a game.

THE U-20 BREAKTHROUGH

On 18 June, Moulton announced that its under-18 player had been promoted into Bangladesh’s U-20 primary squad for the AFC U-20 Asian Cup qualifiers. In Tashkent, Bangladesh opened Group B against hosts Uzbekistan on 31 August and lost 2-0. Mahe and defender Zidane Yousuf were reported as the two overseas-based additions to the squad, and fellow overseas forward Adam Abass came off the bench after 25 minutes.

The tournament went badly for the team. Bangladesh lost all three games, finished bottom and dropped into the Development Phase, while India won the final fixture 3-0 to qualify for the 2027 finals. Even so, pre-match coverage before the India game named Mahe as the striker Bangladesh needed to deliver their first goal. A teenager from Moulton was already the focal point of a national youth attack.

THE SENIOR CALL-UP: SAFF CHAMPIONSHIP 2026

Bangladesh host the SAFF Championship for the first time in eight years, with every match at the National Stadium in Dhaka and evening kick-offs. Head coach Thomas Dooley, who took charge in May, has described the home championship as Bangladesh’s most important tournament.

The timing suits a young forward. Bangladesh beat San Marino 2-1 in June, but both goals came from centre-back Topu Barman, not from a striker. Dooley has been blunt about the gap.

“We need a ‘Number Nine,’ but finding one is extremely difficult.”THOMAS DOOLEY, BANGLADESH HEAD COACH, VIA DHAKA TRIBUNE

Dooley’s search has reached into the diaspora. Japan-based winger Shuki Itofusa was tested as a centre-forward and did not convince. US-based striker Ronan Sullivan, who impressed at youth level, has been confirmed as available from 1 November. Two of the squad’s most prominent overseas names, Hamza Choudhury and Shamit Shome, are not expected before the FIFA window opens on 9 November, which is after the opener. That leaves room in the early matches for a fresh forward who is already scoring.

Mahe’s profile fits the brief on paper: a forward in form, young enough to grow with the project, and already familiar with the national set-up from the U-20 camp. Whether he starts, comes off the bench or is eased in is Dooley’s decision, and no report I could access says which.

WHY THE RISE MATTERS

Mahe’s story reads as three things at once. For him, it is a fast climb from the under-18s to a senior international squad in under a year. For Moulton, it is proof that a club only recently promoted to step five can produce a national-team player. For Bangladesh, it is another sign that scouting England’s Bangladeshi communities has become part of the plan to find goals.

The next fortnight will show how far the story goes. If he features in Dhaka, a Moulton teenager will have played in front of one of South Asia’s most passionate crowds before his twentieth birthday.
